Starting with snow at DTW to FLA

At Loxahatchee a number of acres is dedicated for research for getting the Everglades back to what it was. They experiment for example with salinity and water levels to see what attracks plants and wildlife.

After Loxahatchee we drove north over the A1A towards Palm Beach. Some unbelievably large houses and very expensive boats.

At Gator Park we took an airboat ride through the marshes

A cockatoo (kaketoe) making a lot of noice

Very difficult to spot amongst the tall grass but we managed to find several gators, turtles and fish.

Inside the leafs of these water lilies live small worms...

...like this one. They are excellent bait because they wiggle about when they swim from leaf to leaf.

At the visitor center a few miles east we asked if manatees had been spotted and indeed they were. Well, there was one spotted at Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center.

There are actually between ten and sixteen thousand island depending on the water level. Even one solitary tree counts as an island. The islands consist of three types of mangrove trees: red, white and black.
